F. E. Maning lived in New Zealand for nearly 50 years and is buried in Auckland. He wrote during the New Zealand land wars in the mid 1800s and only completed two books, though he started another (Young New Zealand). Those two books, however, have become known as New Zealand classics.[1]

- Old New Zealand: a tale of the good old times (1863)
- A history of the war in the north of New Zealand against the chief Heke (1862)
Despite the titles sounding like non-fiction historical accounts, both books were fictitious, though based on Maning's real life experiences.
